According to Tomas Raffo, an economist with the Argentine workers Central trade union’s Institute of studies and Training, 2004 â€Å"Argentina has beaten an all-time record: it is the only country in the world where poverty has grown faster than the population. † In Argentina there are deep disparities in income and wealth. Rodriguez, (2002) In the year 2000 the richest ten percent of Argentina’s population earned roughly thirty six percent of the country’s income, whereas the poorest ten percent earned merely 1. 5 percent of the income. Needless to say, these statistics are sad to say the least. These estimates are determined by surveys done on sub-groups, and the results then being weighted by the number of people in each group. An example would be rich nations employ more generous standards of poverty, than the poor nations do. Rodriguez, (2002) In 1970 the population of Argentina stood at twenty two million people, of which one million were poor. Now the population is at thirty eight million and eighteen million of these people are poor. This is basically stating that there are sixteen million more people in Argentina and seventeen million more are poor. Majority of the nations unfortunate conditions come primarily from one issue, which is genetically engineered crops, the effect it has on children, and it’s relation with political regulation. One of the key underlying causes in regards to the poverty rate in Argentina has to do directly with genetically engineered (GE) crops. In many other parts of the world this is actually helping to feed the world, but in Argentina the effect is opposite of that, in which it is actually increasing poverty and hunger. Argentina has used GE crops more than any other location other than the United States. Since they were originally introduced in the year 1996 the area that is under soya cultivation has more than doubled, but during this same period food insecurity has increased greatly (Rodriguez, 2002). If you set aside export led growth as well as models of globalization, the reality is that Argentina has hundreds of thousands of children who are currently malnourished or at risk of this. GE crops may not be the only reason for poverty in Argentina, but the spread of these crops has undermined the resilience and capacity of people to look after them when the government fails. GE crops essentially lock Argentina into the wrong kind of trade: a model of export-oriented agriculture that serves a few privileged, but in turn undermines the food security of normal people at home (Rodriguez, 2002). A large part of their GE soya crop is actually turned into fodder and used on livestock. The production methods that are used rely on a heavy use of chemicals is destructive to local environments as well as local communities. There are also other false claims that go along with the production of GE crops such as they are no more productive than other varieties. The gains in production that can be seen simply come from turning more land over to agriculture and not actual productivity movements. The GE soya production poses an even further threat to Argentina’s most valuable rainforest areas. There is much evidence that shows that GE-free, patent-free, and chemical free farming already is working in positively in other parts of the world as explained by Rodriguez, (2002). On top of this there is tremendous potential to provide livelihoods and food security to millions more not only in Argentina, but around the world as well. Roughly 700,000 children are born each year, and 11,000 of them do not even make it to see their first birthday (Alonso, 2004). Alonso further explained that scenarios that could have been easily avoided cause six out of ten of these deaths. More than half of the children who suffer from anemia the cause of it is the lack of iron. This then in turn affects their brain development and influences their capacity to learn and interact socially. A majority of these children show a delay in growth as well and leven percent of children under the age of six are much smaller than they should be (Alonso, 2004). The latest National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) showed that in May of 2003 the poverty affected 73. 5 percent of children under the age of 14. 41. 2 percent lived in extreme poverty, 64,2 percent between the ages fifteen and eighteen were poor, and 30. 8 percent of that proportion was destitute (Alonso, 2004). People are classified as poor if there family’s income can only cover food, and there classified as indigent or extremely poor if they cannot afford a basic diet. For example, a family of two adults and two children with an income of less than 250 dollars is considered poor, whereas if a family this same size only made 115 dollars would be considered indigent (Alonso, 2004). A good start program being led by UNICEF is trying to be put together in order to remind the public of the rights children have and the specific care a child who is under the age of three needs. According to Andres Criscaut UNICEF representative, â€Å"The prenatal stage and the first three years of life are a critical period for the development of childrens cognitive, language and social and emotional skills† (Alonso, 2004). They are arguing that a decent diet alone is not enough, but rather safety, and trust as well. In 1996 when Laura Padilla and her advocates protested against the political regime of governor Sapag, the working income was possibly way less than two dollars a day. Moreover, the people demanded the need for jobs, where much of the population didnt have much steady income. Thousands of committed and courageous protesters took stance to for 7 days; hold up all entre to roads in the area, even halting goods and people for six nights. These protesters were deeply involved and dedicated to a plane that was heavily organized and arranged. They had an effective plane that startled their opponent, yet made history worldwide. The relationship she had with other protesters also contributed to her stand out performance of leading a huge population of people. Everyday life for Laura was a drive and passion to change how the government system worked in Argentina. As the famous quote said â€Å"Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity†. This quote is able to illustrate the ongoing trials that women have been facing for years. In the event that a man takes charge and spurs a movement it is seen as an heroic act, one that should be acknowledged as bravery. This contrasts greatly with societies views on women’s initiative to spark change. For so long women have not been given the credit for their great accomplishments because they have been stuck with the stereotype of mans lesser half for centuries. When this inferior half begins to think and act on its own, not with the help or guidance of a man, it is an unusual occurrence in the eyes of society. In any case, digression from societies norms is taken on as insanity, which is what women innovators have been titled. One can note this double standard through out history and even in modern times although progress has been made. Laura became the main spokes person for the people, where she then developed the ability to argue and deliver an influential message that overturned Argentina’s previous ideas and created occupations and resources to help the general public. Needless to say the poverty issue in Argentina is something that needs to be worked on immediately. The severity of this situation is only growing. The effect that is takes on not only these poor children, but everyone else in Argentina is indescribable. Regardless of whether you are an adult or a child, no one should have to do what these children are forced to deal with on a daily basis Things like the production of genetically engineered crops are only helping to contribute to this, and it seems that if they were to eliminate it, it would be very beneficial to those who are living below the poverty line. It is just a matter of finding a way to produce crops that is equally efficient and not more cost effective. It takes more than just food and clothing though to help get and keep these people from becoming or remaining poor. People like Laura Padilla are going to have to continue to have confidence in stepping up and telling the government just how they feel in regards to what is taking place here. The Innovators Of American Literature From their critical assessments on how to improve themselves and to the American public that they influenced by their writings, Jonathan Edwards and Benjamin Franklin illustrate American themes in their personal narratives that quintessentially make part of American Literature. Although they lived in different times during the early development of the United States of America and wrote for different purposes, they share common themes. Their influence by their environment, individualism, proposals for a better society, and events that affected their society generate from their writings. By analyzing Jonathan Edwards' Personal Narrative, Resolutions, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, and selections from Benjamin Franklin's The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin found in The Heath Anthology of American Literature: Third Edition Volume One edited by Paul Lauter, the fundamental themes in American literature are evident and their individual ideas are distinctive. These personal narratives reveal the influences of their environment that gave them epiphanies to their closer perfection of themselves. Jonathan Edwards' Personal Narrative shows his journey towards a closer relationship to God. His family was followers of the Congregationalist Church, and from early childhood, he followed a Christian life (Lauter 569). In the beginning of his autobiography, Personal Narrative, he says I had a variety of concerns and exercise about my soul from my childhood; but had two more remarkable seasons of awakening, before I met with that change, by which I was brought to those new dispositions, and that new sense of things, that I have had (Lauter 581). Edwards endures a rite of passage, which brings him closer to God. These epiphanies assisted on his assessment of becoming a better man in the eyes of God and minister to his community. Benjamin Franklin did not hold his family beliefs of Christianity, but from his early environment, he drew his relationship to God as a Deist. Franklin believed there is a Supreme Being and it is our job to discover our own reality by reasoning. In his autobiography, he notes several epiphanies that changed his lifestyle. For example, he regretted his leaving Miss Read for England without pursuing their relationship further. He calls these regrets or wrongdoings Erratum (Lauter 788). The spirituality of Franklin and Edwards is distinctive, and their writings reflect their experiences and growth of improvement. Franklin as a Deist felt that he created his destiny by the decisions he made. His autobiography illustrates his faults and accomplishments. This openness aims to the audience, the American, in order for them to reevaluate themselves and improve from their weaknesses. Franklin wanted Americans to become better Americans. With Edwards' beliefs, he felt that god predestined every man, and only the elect entered in the afterlife to heaven. He focuses his writing to the Christian audience. His goal is to prepare them to become candidates to be elect and show how the elect can set an example for the rest of the congregation. These men felt the responsibility to live a better life and set the example for every man in their community. As individuals, they constantly contemplate and self-evaluate there position in life and community. In Early American Literature: A Collection of Critical Essays, the editor Michael T. Gilmore writes in the introduction, [the Puritans] in their minds the Bible was the book of history, and typology revealed the developmental pattern of events by finding correspondences between the Old and New Testaments (2). Edwards constantly places his life according to the bible. He believed like Winthrop, that his community needs to prepare and become a city upon a hill (Gilmore 2). Through his contemplation and goals seen in Resolutions, he constantly seeks to improve himself, so he can fulfill God's plan for a new Holy Land, which is his congregation in New England. His sole concentration was interpreting the Bible and living by its words. He recorded his goals to improve himself and set an example to his community. In this paper I will examine the process of working towards achieving the rehabilitation goal, from the initial planning and setting of the goal to the practicum, whereby Michelle is able to practice towards the achievement of the set goal, which is to learn to drive a standard car. After much discussion with Michelle and working towards developing readiness, Michelle was ready to make her Overall Rehabilitation goal statement which is, â€Å"I will learn how to drive a standard car by March 31, 2003.† This statement made by Michelle is the building block for achieving the goal. It provides Michelle with needed structure and focus. Once the rehabilitation statement has been set, Michelle and I examined the various behaviours required in order for Michelle to successfully master her standard car driving skills. The required behaviors are divided into three categories, the implicit behaviors, explicit behaviors, and personally important behaviors. The implicit behaviors include upstanding driving laws and regulations, not stalling the car, and remaining immobile on hills. The explicit behaviors include developing personal techniques of driving and controlling the car, listening to the mechanical sounds of the car, steering with one hand, and investing time in understanding the individual car. The personally important behavior for Michelle includes the ability to successfully master the finesse of driving a standard car. While all the behaviors listed above are needed in order for Michelle to successfully drive the standard car, there are four specific behaviors that are critical for Michelle’s success, and they include, developing hand/eye co-ordination, listening to the mechanical sounds of the car, maneuvering in all conditions, and understanding the driving laws and regulations for driving a standard car. The reason why such behaviors are critical is that without the ability to master these behaviors the car cannot be driven successfully, and there may be legal implications involved. Once Michelle and I listed the critical behaviors, we looked at strengths and deficits in these behaviors. Michelle was able to identify which ones she was having difficulty with and needed to work on, and which ones was she comfortable in doing. The first behavior which is hand/eye co-ordination was stated as a deficit (-), the second behavior which is listening to the car’s mechanical sound was also stated as a deficit (-), the third behavior which is maneuvering in all conditions was stated by Michelle as a strength (+), and the fourth behavior which is understanding the driving laws and regulations for driving a standard car was also stated as a deficit (-). The initial stage in the process of setting and working towards achieving the rehabilitation goal are comprised of exploring the various environmental requirements and looking at the critical skills, which Michelle needs in order to achieve her goal. The second stage in the process includes the functional assessment, which focuses on the development and evaluation of the critical skills. For Michelle the chosen critical skill which she would like to work on is the being able to listen to the car’s mechanical sounds and know when the gears need to be shifted. The skill use description for Michelle is, the percentage of times per week where she does not stall on the road, and this is what we will be measuring. In order for us to measure this skill, an evaluation method was needed. There are two methods which I applied in order to measure Michelle’s skill building effort. The first is driving lessons, which are done on the prompted use level, which means that Michelle can only practice her driving under the supervision and directions of the instructor in driving school registered car. During the driving lessons Michelle will be taken by the driving instructor to practice her driving. The reason why we have to evaluate Michelle’s driving at the prompted level and not at the spontaneous use level is because spontaneous use cannot be tested until the prompted use level has been mastered due to legal implications and the safety of the driver. The second method is a driving log that Michelle will keep with her in order to document her driving lessons. In the log Michelle will put in the date of the driving lesson and she will also document the number of times the car did not stall because the gears and the clutch were shifted properly. This evaluation procedure will provide information on Michelle’s present ability to be attentive to the car’s mechanical sounds and how much practice is needed in order for Michelle to master this skill. Michelle’s skill use goal is that, she successfully shifts the car gears 95% of the time and the car does not stall.
